“The true gospel is a call to self -denial.”
“It is not a call to self-fulfillment”
I was reading from John chapter 6 today. It begins with the popular story of Jesus feeding over 5,000 people with only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Afterward Jesus and His disciples made their way to Capernaum. The crowd followed Him and sought Him there. I found Jesus’ words to them interesting and even a little convicting in verses 26-27. He told them that the only reason they were seeking Him was because they were able to get a meal. He then reminded them that there is a spiritual side to our lives that is even more important than our basic human necessities. He said that we should be as diligent about seeking our spiritual food and nourishment as we are about seeking our physical food.
I began to think about how often I seek God for my own self satisfaction. I seek Him: for wisdom in a certain situation, for guidance in a decision, for healing of a broken heart, for the healing of a relationship, for a physical healing, for help in a dark moment or any other number of things, that are simply for me and my well being. I want Him to help me feel better or be better. When was the last time I sought Him just because He is God? When was the last time I just wanted to sit in His presence? When was the last time I came to Him not wanting anything from Him in this life, but only to know Him better? Tough questions for me today.
